Conference "Communities Go Circular" in Pula: Developing sustainable solutions for the communities of the future

Date: September 12-13, 2024
Location: Social Center Rojc, Living Room, Gajeva 3, Pula

This fall, Pula will become a hub for discussions on circular economy and sustainability, as the international conference “Communities Go Circular" is being held in September. This two-day event will bring together experts, activists, and citizens dedicated to the concept of a circular economy and zero waste practices. The conference will take place on September 12 and 13, 2024, at the Community Center Rojc and the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, with an extensive program that includes lectures, workshops, panels, and exhibitions.

Day 1: September 12
On the first day participants will have the opportunity to explore the Community center Rojc through a guided tour, including visits to the repair café "Radiona Re-Geppetto," the Rojc community library, and Radio Rojc. The program continues with a lecture on the Zero Waste Academy by Jaka Kranjc from the organization Ecologists Without Borders, providing insights into training future zero waste ambassadors.

The next part of the day features a roundtable discussion on the outcomes of the "Communities Go Circular" project and the "Right to Repair" survey, focusing on public attitudes in Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The results will be presented by project partners: Zelena Istra, Zero Waste Italy, Zelena Akcija, Ecologists Without Borders, and KNOF. After lunch, participants will engage in interactive discussions using the World Café method, addressing how to integrate zero waste into everyday life.

The afternoon is reserved for creativity - the EcoLamps workshop of the KNOF collective from Ljubljana in the History and Maritime Museum of Istria guides you through the process of making unique lamps from recycled plastic. The evening concludes with the official opening of the "Sustainable Solutions" exhibition, showcasing innovative eco-design solutions focused on secondary materials, also under the mentorship of the KNOF collective.

Day 2: September 13
The second day begins with a panel discussion titled "Heading towards a zero-waste city", where speakers from Croatia and Italy will present inspiring examples of cities and communities that have successfully implemented zero waste concepts. The mayor of Carmignano, Italy, a leading zero waste city, will be a featured guest. Following this, representatives from the utility company in Velika Gorica, Croatia, will present their achievements, and representatives from the City of Pula and utility company Herculanea will introduce the concept for a new reuse center project in Pula.

Following this, there will be a discussion on managing reuse community projects, focusing on practical and inspiring examples such as bike repair shop, Humana Nova – textile reuse social enterprise, repair café, second-hand boutiques, library of things, etc., with guests from Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.

The conference will close with a workshop on cooking with leftovers, led by Matija Horg, chef and organic farmer, during which participants will have the opportunity to learn how to reduce kitchen waste in a creative and sustainable way.
