First activity of the “Threads of Change” project: creative mending workshop inspired by the kintsugi philosophy

Zelena Istra invites citizens to the first public activity of the new transnational project Threads of Change – Circular Fashion Through Community Participation. The workshop will take place on 26 February at 18:00 at Dnevni boravak Rojc. Through a creative Japanese art of kintsugi approach to textiles, participants will learn how to transform damaged garments, such as jeans and jackets, into unique and aesthetically appealing pieces.

The workshop will be led by Nina Yuki Jugovac, an artist and educator who promotes sustainable fashion practices, creativity, and the personal stories of materials through textile upcycling and redesign. The workshop is open to everyone, with special attention given to gender equality and accessibility for persons with disabilities, ensuring equal opportunities for participation.

The Threads of Change project promotes sustainable and circular practices in the textile sector by connecting local action with European public policies. It addresses the challenges of fast fashion and textile waste and contributes to a just and inclusive transition towards a circular textile economy in Southeast Europe. Through workshops, fashion labs, advocacy activities, and pilot actions, the project directly engages citizens, small businesses, public authorities, and representatives of marginalised groups, strengthening their knowledge, skills, and opportunities to participate in shaping sustainable policies and practices. Special attention is given to communities that are often present in the textile reuse sector but excluded from decision-making processes.

The project is coordinated by Zelena Istra, with partners Ekologi brez meja (Slovenia), Zelena akcija (Croatia), KNOF (Slovenia), and the Faculty of Textile Technology (Croatia). Associated partners include the Ljubljana Technology Park, Ekotekstil, and Zero Waste Europe. The project is funded by the European Commission under the CERV – Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme.

Project activities are expected to contribute to the development of textile repair and reuse skills, strengthen civic participation in policymaking, encourage new circular business models, and enable greater inclusion of marginalised groups in decision-making processes. This first workshop marks the beginning of this extensive transnational project, offering participants the opportunity to contribute to more sustainable and inclusive fashion through hands-on work and creativity.
