Environmental education is becoming an increasingly important priority across Europe, yet many young people still lack meaningful opportunities to learn about sustainability and explore ways to become actively involved. Although most young people consider environmental issues important, many do not feel sufficiently equipped with the knowledge, skills, or opportunities needed to actively contribute to building a more sustainable future. At the same time, educators and youth workers often face challenges such as limited time, guidance, and resources for integrating sustainability topics into their activities.
As youth work continues to evolve in response to global challenges, it is important to provide engaging and accessible learning opportunities that help young people understand complex environmental issues. However, traditional educational materials often fail to connect sustainability education with practical skills such as critical thinking, systems thinking, and civic engagement, limiting young people’s ability to turn awareness into concrete action.
The EcoQuest 2 project responds to this challenge by developing innovative, gamified educational tools that make environmental education more engaging and accessible. The project provides educators and youth workers with the knowledge and skills they need to help young people better understand sustainability challenges and explore ways to contribute to positive change.
The project brings together youth organisations and experts in game-based learning to create a comprehensive learning experience that combines digital and live activities. Through storytelling, a narrative video game, and an educational LARP (Live Action Role-Playing) game, the project encourages active participation and enables young people to explore sustainability topics in an interactive and youth-centred way.
The project will result in a range of educational resources, including a narrative video game, an educational LARP game, a guide on green competences, worksheets, and an educator’s handbook. These resources will be tested by the project partners to ensure that they are practical, engaging, and adaptable to different youth work contexts across Europe.
